Experience With Baraha Software

Baraha Kannada Editor

My music teacher AV Prakash sent me the Carnatic junior notes with my wife who was coming from India.  Originally someone had prepared that notes in typewriter and the photo copies of that notes been given to the students.  If any changes required to the photocopy, instead of writing on the copy itself, I thought of creating some source files so that I can easily edit it, make it a PDF and refer to a neat notes all the time.  And also hoping to share the source and a print copy with guru when I visit India.  So this is the background I bought Baraha software.

I stumbled on some issues using this software squarely becuase writing music notation was totally unknown to me.  I reached out to Baraha on their email baraha.sales@hotmail.com and got the issues resolved.  So thought of jotting down those issues and the solutions here so that it may help someone in the same situation. Or, it may come handy if I too need it in future.

1.  Usually the high pitch swara (taara sthayi) is denoted with a dot on top of that swara.  Similary low pitch swara (mandra sthayi) with a dot below.  But how to use these dots in Baraha?
Use W next to the swara you want to make it taara sthayi and use Q next to the swara you want to make it mandrya sthayi.  Make sure that you are using Baraha extra font for this.

2.  How to write dheerga or two dheergas (ರೀ) where you want to express two maatras?
Answer:  Type '&' after "ri".  Though it doesn't translate exactly to ರೀ, this results in Avagraha (just search for Avagraha symbol in google to see how it looks) symbol.  That will be sufficient to show dheerga in musical notation.

What is Governance? (Copied from a mail forward)

As a daily habit, the 10-year Old Pintu was reading newspaper.Suddenly he asked his father, "Dad! What does it mean by 'Governance System?'"

"It's like..." father said while thinking, "See! I earn and bring money to our home, mean's I am a 'Money Holder'. Your mother decides where and how to spend that money and that means she is the Government. That maid in our home is doing all the household works, so she will be 'Labour Class'.You are a 'Common man' or 'Public'. Your kid brother is 'Future' or the 'Next Generation', understand?"

That day Pintu slept with all those thoughts. In the middle of the night he woke-up because his kid brother was crying. He wetted the mattress so he was crying. Pintu went to woke-up his mother. She was in deep sleep so Pintu went to the Maid's room to wake her up. But there his father was sleeping with the maid. So he came back with frustration.Next morning father asked Pintu, "Hey Pintu Darling! You understood the 'Governance System'?".  Pintu replied, "Yeah Dad, I understood! Last Night, Money Holder was exploiting Labour Class and our Government was sleeping. Future of our nation was crying for not getting their basic needs fulfilled and in all this Common Man (I)was suffering!" *****
